Grievance Letter Generator

A Step 1 grievance letter has to do four things: identify the grievant, state what happened, cite the contract violation, and demand the remedy. Enter the facts — we structure the document.

Drafting tips

  • Be specific about the violation. A vague statement of facts gives management nothing to respond to and weakens the record at arbitration.
  • Cite the contract article and any other applicable provisions. Add "and any other articles, sections, and past practices that may apply" as a catch-all.
  • Demand make-whole relief. Reinstatement, back pay, restoration of benefits, removal of the discipline from the file, and any other appropriate remedy.
  • Get signatures and a date-stamped copy. Hand-deliver and demand a signed receipt, or send by certified mail with return receipt.
